goHDR, a business start up focusing on video compression technology, has gained access to the world’s first true High Dynamic Range (HDR) video camera.
The camera is capable of 20 f-stops, full HD (1920 Ă— 1080) resolution at 30 frames per second. Typically the HDR camera captures data at 24 MBytes per frame or 42 Gigabytes per minute of footage, compared to just 9 Gigabytes for a minute of normal video footage! So as you can imagine, with this sort of throughput, a major challenge in the adoption of HDR video will be making the data-stream the camera generates more manageable.
As we all know HDR technology has been widely adopted in the CG arena with HDR stills being used to map real world lighting situations onto 3D models and environments. Transferring these HDR principles to video and film could lead to the next big advances in television quality, as well as offing the potential for saving with regards to studio setup and lighting for inside broadcasting.
